Beginning Letter Sounds

Letter and letter sounds are very important when are first starting out for reading and writing.  We have been playing games and singing songs to try and help us learn the different letters that each sound makes.

The first letter in mirror is . . . . m and it say mmmm!

The first letter in jewels is . . . . j

Number Work

We have been working hard to write our numerals (1 to 10) with different count the room activities.  Now we are working on matching the numerals with their quantity.  Some of us do it quickly and some of us try to do it in unique ways.

Apples, apples, apples

We talked about some of our assumptions about apples and we found out some of them were correct and some of them were not.  Apples do float.  They come in many different colours and we can eat them.  Today we found out the apple cycle from seed to apple.  It takes three to five years to get an apple from an apple tree.  An apple seed from one apple grows a different apple.  They start out as tiny things called fruitlets.

Apple Schema

We have started to learn about apples.  We started in both classes by creating a poster of a large apple.  We then put all the things we think we know on our apple schema paper.
That happened yesterday.  I noticed that some of the children believed that apples would sink and others believed they would float.  We started by placing our name in one of the columns.  Then on to our first experiment.

When we did this experiment we tried it with three different types of apples.  (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and MacIntosh).  Each child was able to choose one apple and place it in the water.  Wow!  Look all of the apples no matter what colour floated.

Then we looked at the different characteristics of each apple.  What makes each of them special and unique.

Then on to experiment number two.  The taste test and graphing the apples we liked the best.
