Harvest

We were very lucky this week in that we went out to the school garden and helped to harvest some of the vegetables.  Before going to the garden I asked the children what they thought the word harvest meant.  Some of the children answered, "Pulling things from the ground." or "Taking the food from farmers for the animals."  others were a little more confused and gave answers like "Puppies" or "Eating cookies."  We talked about all the different things that you can harvest and that the word harvest starts with the letter 'H'.  We went on to learn the letter sound for 'H' and created our very first journal entry that was . . . a hippo.

The different leaves from the vegetables.

Look at the big onion.

Wow!  Look at those carrots!

I got a beet.

After these fun activities we used carrot tops and some sand to create both an uppercase and lowercase 'H'.  We also created lists as a class of words that start with the letter 'H'.
